28 November 2008 - Press Release

Godfrey Bloom UKIP MEP for Yorkshire said,

"I find it outrageous that Whitby trawlermen are paying taxes to support their Belgian competitors to the tune of about £50,000 a head. Belgian Beam Trawlers are some of the most environmentally damaging boats to sail the North sea and should be reigned in, not subsidised".

The Belgian Fishing Industry has 120 boats and employs 880 fishermen, the 52.5 million subsidy covers the period 2007-2013.

27 November 2008 -

You may find it interesting to read the Labour Manifesto of 1983, which Gordon Brown and Tony Blair were both elected to Parliament on, which sets out a means of withdrawal that is quite similar. The link is: http://www.labour-party.org.uk/manifestos/1983/1983-labour-manifesto.shtml  and the relevant section reprinted below for interest:

The process of withdrawal

On taking office we will open preliminary negotiations with the other EEC member states to establish a timetable for withdrawal; and we will publish the results of these negotiations in a White Paper. In addition, as soon as possible after the House assembles, we will introduce a Repeal Bill: first, in order to amend the 1972 European Communities Act, ending the powers of the Community in the UK; and second, to provide the necessary powers to repeal the 1972 Act, when the negotiations on withdrawal are completed.

Following the publication of the White Paper, we will begin the main negotiations on withdrawal. Later, when appropriate and in the same parliament, we will use our powers to repeal the 1972 Act and abrogate the Treaty of Accession - thus breaking all of our formal links with the Community. Britain will at this point withdraw from the Council of Ministers and from the European Parliament.

There will need to be a period of transition, to ensure a minimum of disruption - and to phase in any new agreements we might make with the Community. This will enable us to make all the necessary changes in our domestic legislation. Until these changes in UK law have taken place, the status quo as regards particular items of EEC legislation will remain. And this period will, of course, extend beyond the date when we cease, formally, to be members.

26 November 2008 - In September 2004 I was vilified by the press, front page of the Guardian, called neandertal in the Daily Mail, hounded by an outraged media. Yet what I said then is now received wisdom. What about an apology?

24 November 2008 - Statement from Godfrey on the Chancellor's proposed Fiscal Package

The proposed package is not a solution. The crisis has been caused by imprudent borrowing and imprudent lending. The package actually is recommending more of the same. 2.5% off VAT is a meaningless gesture when consumer durables are already massively discounted in the current market. No one is going to buy a new car or fridge for another 2.5% off the price.

Moreover if all tax cuts are ‘funded’ i.e. borrowed against, the economy cannot grow of itself. As Churchill appositely said a country cannot tax itself into growth any more than a man can stand in a bucket and pull himself up by the handle

The Prime Minister complained when interviewed by Jon Sopel on the politics show about the dishonesty of American banks and toxic debt.

Yet this is exactly what he and his government have done. Public sector debt which includes private funding initiatives and public sector pension commitment runs to nearly one trillion pounds. No effort is being made to address these issues. Even today Nottingham NHS Trust is advertising for diversity outreach officers when they are short of radiographers.

East Yorkshire council have given their already well paid senior officer a 12% pay increase. In the public sector it is business as usual.

Unless there is a massive effort to move workers to the wealth creation sector, further cuts in interest20rates, massive welfare reform the recession will turn to depression and the pound will continue its decline and our children and grandchildren will curse us as they emigrate to the old Dominions.

Godfrey Bloom met with senior members of the Sikh Federation in Ypres on Tuesday the 11th November to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I and to remember the contribution of the 80,000 Sikhs who fought for the British Army during that war and their losses.

They also took the opportunity to discuss human rights issues particularly on the Sub-continent and discrimination against Sikh mostly on the continent of Europe.

This meeting followed up Mr Bloom's trip to Amritsar in the Spring where he led a delegation to the Golden Temple and had a series of meetings with senior members of the Sikh religious and political communities.

Godfrey said,  "the immense sacrifice of the Sikhs particularly at Neuve Chapelle where the Sikh regiment suffered a 80% casualty rate should never be forgotten by the peoples of Europe. We must always remember the difference between those who are our friends and those who
merely have the good fortune to be our neighbours"
