Meeting in Hemingbrough
Last night, not for the first time, I attended a meeting of distressed villagers in Hemingbrough. A village with one of the oldest churches in England and in, perhaps, one of the sleepiest corners. Why were they distressed? They have been bitten by a European Directive. The Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive. A little known directive, aren’t they all?, which was designed to stop land locked countries putting unsavoury waste into the rivers and water courses of countries down stream. Countries often newly joined to the EU with lower standards than Western Europe. They are now faced with a proposal to double the size of the sewage treatment plant.
